Knicks on Top, Sixers Set to Disappoint? My 15 Bold Eastern Conference Predictions for 2026/27

After breaking down the Western Conference, it is time to turn to an Eastern Conference that could be one of the most unpredictable and stacked in recent years.

The New York Knicks enter the season as defending NBA champions, while several of their biggest challengers have undergone significant changes during the offseason. Philadelphia has built a superteam, Miami has added Giannis Antetokounmpo and several younger teams will be looking to establish themselves among the East's contenders.

Rather than ranking the teams from first to 15th, I am making one prediction for every Eastern Conference franchise.

Some are relatively safe. Others are much bolder. From playoff upsets and disappointing contenders to major trades and potential Finals runs, here are my 15 predictions for the Eastern Conference ahead of the 2026/27 NBA season.

New York Knicks: First Eastern Conference No. 1 Seed Since 1992/93

The reigning NBA champions are my pick to finish the regular season as the No. 1 seed in the Eastern Conference.

New York has already proven it can go all the way, and I expect the Knicks to remain the team to beat in the East. My prediction is simple: they finish with the best regular season record in the conference for the first time since 1992/93.

Boston Celtics: A Better Regular Season Record Than Philadelphia

This may come as a surprise to some people, but I think Boston will outperform Philadelphia during the regular season.

There are questions surrounding both teams following significant offseason changes, but I trust the Celtics more over an 82-game schedule. My prediction is simple: Boston finishes with a better regular season record than the 76ers.

Philadelphia 76ers: A Shock Second-Round Exit

This might be my boldest prediction in the Eastern Conference.

Despite the expectations surrounding Philadelphia, I think the 76ers will be eliminated in the second round of the playoffs. That would be a complete disaster considering they have assembled one of the strongest starting fives on paper that we have seen in a long time.

There is more than enough talent for Philadelphia to have an excellent regular season, but I am not convinced everything will come together when it matters most.

Detroit Pistons: A Disappointing First-Round Exit Forces a Rethink

After their recent progress, expectations are understandably high in Detroit. However, I think the Pistons will have a disappointing postseason and suffer a first-round playoff exit.

If that happens, I could see Detroit becoming aggressive next summer and pursuing a major trade to bring another star alongside Cade Cunningham. The Pistons have an exciting young core, but they cannot afford to waste the prime years of their best players without seriously trying to contend.

Toronto Raptors: A Healthy Kawhi Makes Toronto a Dark Horse

If Kawhi Leonard can remain healthy, Toronto is my outside pick to reach the NBA Finals.

We know the level Kawhi can reach when healthy, particularly in the postseason. The Raptors might not enter the season among the obvious favourites, but I think they have the potential to become one of the biggest surprises in the Eastern Conference.

Miami Heat: Giannis and Bam Fall Short of the Hype

Giannis Antetokounmpo and Bam Adebayo give Miami one of the most intriguing partnerships in basketball, but I am not as convinced by this Heat team as many others appear to be.

There will be enormous expectations following the arrival of Giannis. While I still expect Miami to be a very good team, I think they will ultimately flatter to deceive and fall short of the preseason hype.

Indiana Pacers: From the Play-In to a First-Round Upset

This is another one of my bolder predictions.

I think Indiana will have to qualify for the playoffs through the Play-In Tournament, but once they get there, they will become an extremely dangerous opponent.

I absolutely loved the Pacers' 2025 playoff run, and this has always been a team capable of raising its level in the postseason. Tyrese Haliburton will also be desperate to make another deep run after a devastating Achilles injury took away his chance of winning a championship in Game 7 of the 2025 NBA Finals.

My specific prediction is that Indiana faces the second-seeded Boston Celtics in the first round and knocks them out.

Orlando Magic: The Coaching Change Does Not Solve Their Problems

Despite making a change on the sidelines, I still expect Orlando to struggle.

There is plenty of talent on the roster, but I am not convinced a coaching change alone will be enough to push the Magic into the upper tier of the Eastern Conference.

My prediction is another frustrating season in Orlando as they struggle to make the jump they desperately need.

Atlanta Hawks: An All-Defensive First Team Selection for Dort or Daniels

Atlanta has one of the best defensive backcourts in the NBA this season, and I think at least one Hawks player will be named to the All-Defensive First Team.

Lu Dort and Dyson Daniels are both elite perimeter defenders, and having them together should allow Atlanta to build a significant part of its identity around defence.

My prediction is that at least one of the pair earns All-Defensive First Team honours, with both having a realistic chance of making it.

Cleveland Cavaliers: A Difficult Season Leads to a Major Trade

I am not particularly optimistic about Cleveland this season.

I have concerns about where this team is heading, and I am not convinced James Harden is the answer. I think the Cavaliers could struggle, eventually forcing the front office to reconsider the direction of the roster.

My prediction is that Cleveland becomes involved in a major trade during the season as it searches for another way forward after the Harden experiment fails.

Charlotte Hornets: Fun to Watch, But No Postseason

Charlotte was one of the more entertaining young teams in the East last season, but I am not particularly impressed by their offseason.

Losing LaMelo Ball to the Timberwolves is a significant blow, and I think the Hornets will suffer because of it.

Despite last season's progress, I am not ready to buy into Charlotte as a genuine postseason team. They could remain around the Play-In conversation for parts of the year, but my prediction is that they ultimately miss the playoffs.

Washington Wizards: Anthony Davis Is Gone Within a Year

I actually think Washington could have a respectable season, but I am not convinced by the long-term direction of the roster.

In particular, I struggle to see Anthony Davis remaining in Washington beyond this season. My prediction is that by this time next year, Davis will have been traded as the Wizards continue reshaping their team for the future.

Brooklyn Nets: The Worst Record in the NBA

My prediction for Brooklyn is straightforward: the Nets will finish with the worst record in the NBA.

I expect this to be another season focused much more heavily on the future than immediate results. In a more competitive Eastern Conference, I think Brooklyn ultimately ends up at the very bottom of the standings.

Chicago Bulls: A Breakout Year Without Team Success

Caleb Wilson is one of the young players I think could have a very impressive individual season. He is also my current pick to win Rookie of the Year.

However, I do not expect that individual success to translate into meaningful results for Chicago. The Bulls might have some encouraging moments, but ultimately, I do not see them making any real noise in the Eastern Conference.

Milwaukee Bucks: Better Than Expected

I actually think Milwaukee could surprise people this season.

Tyler Herro, Myles Turner and the other pieces the Bucks have assembled give them an interesting roster that I think could perform better than expected.

They are no longer among the obvious favourites in the East, but I would not be surprised if this new-look group becomes one of the more pleasant surprises of the season.

Final Thoughts

After several years in which the Western Conference has generally looked stronger, I think the East could be the more stacked conference this season.

The Knicks are my pick to finish with the best regular season record in the East, while probably my boldest prediction is Philadelphia suffering a disappointing second-round exit. I am simply not as high on this Sixers team as much of the basketball world appears to be.

I also hope Indiana can produce more memorable postseason moments. After everything Tyrese Haliburton went through during the 2025 Finals, it would be great to see him return and lead another deep playoff run.

There are also plenty of storylines beyond the leading contenders. Toronto is my dark horse if Kawhi Leonard can stay healthy, Milwaukee could be considerably better than expected and I think Cleveland could make a significant trade if its season starts to unravel as the franchise continues searching for the pieces needed to help Donovan Mitchell finally reach an NBA Finals.

There will inevitably be predictions here that age terribly. I am particularly interested to see whether my Sixers prediction ends up looking genius or completely ridiculous by the end of the season.

But that is the fun of making these predictions before a single game has been played.
